Unusual climate in Southeast Asia

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has issued a warning that 243 million children in the Asia-Pacific region are at risk of heat-related illnesses and death due to hotter and longer heatwaves. In Southeast Asia, unusual weather patterns have resulted in significant impacts, including mass fish mortality in overheated lakes and extensive damage to fruit crops.

Previously, residents in the rain-rich outskirts of Hanoi utilized rainwater or well water as their primary source of drinking water. However, the depletion and pollution of groundwater have necessitated deeper drilling, which has resulted in land subsidence and sinkholes, posing potential risks to local communities.

Unusual climate events often prompt discussions and the implementation of countermeasures only when they are immediately visible. However, as time passes and the immediate effects fade from view, these discussions and countermeasures are gradually forgotten. It is unfortunate that the cost of neglecting these issues eventually manifests as an even more severe and dangerous reality.
